May 21: The Americans capture Wakde Island, off the north coast of Dutch New Guinea, two days after their initial landing. The initial purpose of these detachments, made up of volunteers, was mainly to defend Armenian civilian population, each in a particular village or town. After slaughtering 642 people, the Nazis burnt the entire town. Nazis massacre French residents at Oradour-sur-Glane, France: On June 10, 1944, a Waffen-SS battalion led by Adolf Diekmann surrounded the Vichy French town of Oradour-sur-Glane, where French informants had reported that the Maquis (resistance) was holding a German official for execution. They then killed these local residents by arson and machine gun fire. Great joy was experienced when a hall was hired for Sunday activities and, in April of the same year, the Divisional Commander and Mrs Mead, with the support of Wood Green Band and the local comrades, conducted Sunday afternoon open air witness and in the evening led a Salvation meeting attended by almost 100 people, in which the Corp’s first seeker was registered.
