The school we knew essentially doesn’t exist. In June of 2021, 16 months after our first email exchange, we asked friends and family to write letters and share recipes with women they knew or wanted to know better. We take great pride in our collaboration with this incredible organization and share in their vision to change kid’s lives to change the future. At the same time, the film’s vision of an interracial harmony brokered through song evokes something utopian at work in the pop culture of the nineties, an era when multiple forms of African American music had so thoroughly saturated mainstream consciousness that the notion of “crossover” was beginning to seem obsolete, fostering the fantasy of one nation under a groove. They provided the initial vision for Sister Unn’s. One piece that felt successful was that a good deal of those who walked by would describe feeling as if Sister Unn’s was a memorial. In these letters, we shared recipes that were special to us, and stories of the women who taught them to us; stories of our upbringing and the experiences that had shaped us into the women we are today.
What are our memories of food and care?
